Author Guy Bennett’s poem consists of words extracted from a source text, Walt Whitman’s, “When Lilacs Last in the Dooryard Bloom’d,” which were then organized to form a new poem, his own, “The Lilac Variations.” In homage to this method of derivation, the direction decided upon was another poem, an appropriation of Guy Bennett’s appropriation called, “A Variation of The Lilac Variations.”
The result is a more intuitive approach to the rearrangement of Bennett’s text that evokes an emotional and imaginative response, while still integrating the original poem within the dusk jacket of the book.
This book features black and white film photography, and was letterpress printed using a combination of metal type and polymer plates, and was designed in collaboration with photographer Nicholas Tatone.
